Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
