Trump's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
