Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup match against Newcastle.
