A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
